The opening scene of Greta Gerwig’s film Barbie is almost 7 full minutes of sway and swing and joyousness as it effortlessly revels in the perfection confection that is Barbie Land. The fun is high pitched veering between very fun to really, really very fun. There’s a pace and pink and unwavering enthusiasm for living the Barbie way and we all know that Barbie Land has always been like this. Seeing the film for the first time instigated in me a deep reflection around how I came to experience the unconscious, how I found Jung and how I integrated a workable understanding of Jung’s idea of answering the questions the dead leave the living. Starting from Barbie’s own question, this personal essay looks to analyse my own uncanny experiences and what they taught me about Jung’s own encounters with the unconscious.
