BLOCKS AGAINST THE ESTATE brought together a series of Master of Architecture student analytical models developed within Advanced History & Theory 2 PG [9781] - 2026 - @uc_artsdesign , exploring hypothetical applications of housing theory from the Industrial Revolution to the present within the suburban fabric of Canberra.Rather than conventional drawings, the exhibition was composed as a field of blocks that collectively reconstructed Canberra’s plan. Each block represented an individual response to a specific housing issue, translating theoretical positions into spatial propositions and critiques. Together, the works tested how historical and contemporary ideas of housing manifest under current socio-economic conditions, with a focus on resisting the intensification of capitalism and its spatial consequences.
Grounded in research on utopian visions, ideology and the housing estate, and the commodification of architecture, the projects used the city itself as both context and medium—embedding critique and speculation directly into its fabric. Each block operated as a “theoretical model,” proposing strategies or exposing overlooked conditions in housing provision, forming a fragmented yet interconnected reimagination of the bush capital.
The installation invited visitors to navigate the constructed landscape and engage with how historical perspectives, theoretical inquiry, and local realities can inform more critical and responsive approaches to housing. The exhibition presented a collective body of work that foregrounded process, research, and spatial experimentation.
