Description
In recent years, much has been written about democratic decline, democratic backlash, and even how democracies die. This short course takes a different angle. Instead of focusing on breakdown, we will explore how democracies survive and thrive by building resilience, repair and reform themselves, and sometimes even emerge stronger. We will look at the role of different actors, institutions and discourses in this process: from social movements and deliberative practices to political leaders and everyday citizens. Conceptually, the course is organised around three themes: democratic resilience, democratic repair, and democratic reform. Through these concepts and practical examples, you will gain a deeper understanding of how democracies respond to challenges, sustain their resilience, and find ways to innovate. This five-weeks course is designed and delivered by Professor Selen Ercan as part of her visiting fellowship at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil in September and October 2025.| Period | 10 Sept 2025 → 9 Oct 2025 |
