As educators we sometimes like to think that we ‘make a difference’ in students’ lives, encouraging them to consider new or alternative career opportunities based on our teaching. But what influence do law teachers really have? And how directly is that influence felt compared to factors like assessment, peers and employment? Andrew Henderson discusses the outcomes of qualitative interviews with 65 law students at ANU and UC, coded using an attributional methodology, to identify the extent to which students themselves perceive us, law teachers, to be influential. He also discusses what students report can make a law teacher influential.
