2023 Radio Bangla Canberra Interview: Cyber Security – Importance, Threats and Protection

    Description

Invited as a cyber security expert for a 30-minute radio interview on Radio Bangla Canberra titled “Technology: Cyber Security – Importance, Threats and Protection”. The interview was conducted in Bangla and targeted Bangladeshi-Australian communities and Bangla-speaking audiences across Australia and possibly internationally.

The interview focused on increasing cyber security awareness among culturally and linguistically diverse communities, particularly older community members and individuals with limited technical backgrounds who may be vulnerable to cyber scams, phishing attacks, online fraud, identity theft, ransomware, and social engineering attacks. Complex cyber security concepts were translated into practical and accessible advice to help listeners better understand cyber risks and adopt safer online behaviours.

Topics discussed included cyber hygiene, password security, multi-factor authentication, online shopping scams, banking fraud, phishing attacks, social media risks, and strategies for protecting personal and family information online. The interview also highlighted the growing impact of cybercrime on individuals and communities and the importance of cyber resilience in everyday life.

    Significance

Radio Bangla Canberra is one of Australia's longest-running Bangla-language community radio programs, with more than 25 years of broadcasting history and a global audience spanning over 40 countries through radio, online streaming, podcasts, social media, and mobile applications.

This 30-minute interview extended the University of Canberra's cyber security expertise to multicultural and international audiences, contributing to community education, digital literacy, cyber awareness, and public engagement. The activity demonstrated research translation and societal impact by making cyber security knowledge accessible to vulnerable and underrepresented populations who may otherwise have limited access to cyber security education and awareness resources.
