DescriptionIncludes findings from Digital News Report Australia 2018:

Most Australians read online news for free, but in the past two years there has been a doubling in the number of readers paying for access, the News and Media Research Centre at the University of Canberra’s Digital News Report: Australia 2018 shows.

Those paying for online news content make up 20 per cent of the market.

A co-author of the report, Dr Caroline Fisher, said the research found an “encouraging” increase in willingness to pay for news among younger age groups.

“Having grown up not paying for news, especially if you relied on TV and didn’t pay for print newspapers, beginning to pay for it requires a big shift,” she said.
