Plans to knock down and rebuild German embassy buildings revealed

Description

Discussion with Georgina Sebar in ‘Plans to knock down and rebuild German embassy buildings revealed', The Canberra Times (Tuesday 24 February 2026).

Subject

The German embassy will knock down its mid-century chancery to make way for a modern building following an international design competition.

Berlin-based architecture firm Richter Musikowski, in partnership with Sydney-based firms Lahznimmo and Spackman Mossop Michaels, was announced as the winner of the competition run by the embassy in 2025.

Their design was praised by the jury for its environmental impact, low construction and operating costs and respect for the existing ecosystem.

The new chancery, where the administrative work of the embassy will be performed, has been designed as a curved building leading into the existing garden.
