What your child can learn from writing a letter to Santa

Those lists taught my children a valuable lesson about writing: it has a purpose.

We write to communicate with others. Sometimes the purpose is to achieve something, like my children's Santa letters or a job application, other times it may be to entertain, or inform, or persuade. But it is always purposeful — or at least it should be.
