Biography
Dr Abu Barkat Ullah (Barkat) is an Associate Professor in Cyber Security and Program Director for Cyber Security at the University of Canberra, within the School of Information Technology and Systems. He leads the development and delivery of cyber security programs, including curriculum design, online learning innovation, and industry-aligned micro-credentials.
His research focuses on cyber defence, AI-driven threat detection, human factors in security, and risk governance, with applications in critical infrastructure and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs). He served as the University of Canberra Project Lead for the CRC-P funded $6.4M “Adaptive Cyber Security for Defence and Critical Infrastructure SMEs” project (2024–2025), including $3M in grant funding, where he led the development of predictive and resilient cyber security frameworks.
Dr Barkat ullah has published in leading journals and international conferences, and his work has attracted significant public engagement, with over 70,000 reads on The Conversation. He has received recognition for excellence in teaching and research and is regularly invited to serve as an external examiner for HDR theses.
He actively collaborates with industry, government, and academic partners, and is committed to advancing cyber security capability through research, education, and professional engagement. He is a founding member of the Canberra Cyber Hub Steering Committee and an active member of professional bodies including ACS, IEEE, and AISA.
