Biography
Frank den Hartog specializes in cyber security of critical infrastructures and complex wireless networked systems research and analysis, with a particular interest in (Industrial) Internet of Things and Cyber-Physical Systems. Between 2003 and 2016 he was a Senior Scientist at the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research TNO, and studied Future Internet architectures and heterogeneous consumer networking. Before joining TNO he worked for the Dutch incumbent telecommunications operator KPN, where he pioneered the home networking and IoT research area. He obtained a PhD in physics from Leiden University, and an MSc from Eindhoven University of Technology.
During his long career in the industry he acquired and managed numerous large collaborative research projects, e.g. in the European Framework Program (Horizon 2020), and held various leadership positions. From 2012-2016 he was Chair of the Technical Working Group of the worldwide Home Gateway Initiative (HGI) industry consortium. His innovations in home networking gained international recognition, and won several academic as well as industry awards.
He has been a guest lecturer at various European universities, a Lecturer/Tutor at the Australian National University (ANU), and an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of School (Education) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He co-authored 82 peer-reviewed articles in academic media, 23 patent applications, and 67 accepted contributions to standardisation bodies. He is a co-editor of 7 international telecommunications standards. He has been a recurrent IEEE Tutorial presenter at the International IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference (CCNC), and successfully supervised 7 Masters/Honours research students and 2 PhD students. He has been a member of 8 PhD Exam Committees, and of numerous conference steering committees, organizing committees and technical program committees, and is a reviewer for various journals.
