Biography
Dr John Hawkins is head of the Canberra School of Government and a senior lecturer in economics and public policy and received his PhD from the Australian National University. His research area is in monetary policy which refers to the decisions taken by the Reserve Bank to set their cash rate target in such a way as to contribute to low inflation and low unemployment.
Areas of research include:
- Central banking and monetary policy
- Australian (and Canberra's) economic and political history
- Behavioural science
- History of economic thought
Engagement and service roles
John is co-editor of History of Economics Review, a journal of the history of economic thought. He is a frequent media commentator and contributor to The Conversation and He has won the following awards:
· Executive Dean (UC Faculty of Business, Government and Law) Commendation for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (Individual) 2020
· Executive Dean (UC Faculty of BGL) Excellence Award for Excellence in Research, Engagement and Impact 2021

John has served in the following roles at the university:
· UC Values Champion 2022-2023 (developing and promoting UC’s values statement)
· Elected member of University of Canberra Academic Board for term 2023-2024.
· Representative of UC Academic Board on Curriculum Committee 2024

John currently has six doctoral students (3 primary and 3 secondary; 2 PhD and 4 DBA; 5 domestic and 1 Singapore). He is open to an additional PhD student and/or honours student in the fields listed above.
