Personal profile

Research interests

I am a marine geochemist. I use and develop a range of elements and isotopes as proxies for Southern Ocean dynamics and ice-ocean interaction. I specialise in Beryllium isotopes, utilising meteoric 10Be to reconstruct upwelling conditions of warm Circumpolar Deep Water around the Antarctic continent. The use of Be-isotopes in this space still requires significant development, which has led me to extracting beryllium from both sediment and water to investigate how dissolved beryllium is deposited into the sedimentary record.

Biography

Geoscience has been what excites me since I left school, following which I completed a Bachelor of Science (Hons) majoring in Geology, and a Master of Science specialising in Earth Science at the University of Auckland. Through the two years of research at UoA, I worked closely with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NZ), working on sediment cores to understand the provenance and flow dynamics associated with turbidity currents of mixed provenance. Through this collaboration, I was invited to participate on a research voyage aboard the German research vessel RV Sonne. This became a pivotal point in my career, after which I persued a PhD.

I ended up at UC in 2018 to work on a PhD that developed Be-isotopes from sediments for paleoceanography applications. I submitted in 2022 and graduated in 2024. In this times I collaborated with, and conducted labwork at, ANSTO in Sydney and IMAS in Hobart. I also conducted a range of terrestrial and marine field work, including three research voyages, two of which were south of the 60°S.

I have a passion for my field, love to collaborate with other scientists, and cant wait to conduct fieldwork in remote places.
