Personal profile

Biography

Patrick joined UC as a Professor in June 2018 with a particular commitment to work with and facilitate others to develop their academic careers, via what he terms ‘academic performance coaching’. In doing so, he hopes to raise the scale and profile of research and scholarship at the University, as well as broaden conceptions of ‘valuable academic work’ across Higher Education globally.  In part, this will be achieved by influencing current conceptions of Impact in relation to the contributions of academia to society.

Research Expertise and Interests

As well as his interest and scholarship in ‘academic impact’, Patrick is a highly experienced researcher and research supervisor, with a strong track record in collaborative publications with students and supervisory colleagues. Areas of particular interest are:

  • Evidence-based practice
  • Implementing change in clinical practice
  • Health Professional curriculum innovation, including Interprofessional education
  • Assessing and assuring clinical/professional competence
  • Threshold Learning Concepts
  • Signature Pedagogies

Patrick has experience of using and supervising the work of HDR students, using a variety of qualitative and quantitative resrearch designs.

Patrick has a significant track record of leadership in Higher Education broadly and in Nursing/Health in particular. He became a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2015, one of around 150 such Fellows globally, at the time. In 2018, he was identified as one of the top 10 education-focused nursing academics in Australia in an evidence-based article in the Journal of Advanced Nursing.  He was awarded a Carrick Citation for significant contribution to student learning in 2007. Patrick was Chair of the Council of Deans of Nursing and Midwifery (ANZ) between 2009 and 2013.  He holds Honorary Professorial appointments at the universities of Stavanger (Norway), Huddersfield (UK) and Wollongong (Australia).  He is an Associate Editor of the highly credible international journal Nurse Education in Practice.

Prior to joining UC, Patrick was National Head of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine at ACU (housing the largest nursing programme in Australia >6,500 students). Previously he was founding Director for the Wollongong Academy for Tertiary Teaching and Learning Excellence (WATTLE) and before that, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Wollongong.

Between 2013 and 2016, he was a Consultant to the Australian Commonwealth Government’s Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) during which time he devised and implemented the OLT’s Transforming Practice Programme – a programme facilitating collaborative change in multiple universities across Australia and the UK.
