Phil graduated from University of Sydney in 1992 with the university prize for clinical excellence. After roles in surgical, ICU, orthopedics, amputee rehabilitation, and outpatient clinics, Phil accepted a role with the Australian Defence Force where he later became department senior and area health manager for injury surveillance and prevention. Roles with local, national, International rugby and cricket, and clinical roles with Olympic squads led to completion of a Master of Sports Physiotherapy in 1999, with 2 academic excellence awards. Phil's leadership and governance skills have developed through service on multiple corporate, academic, professional and community boards. The Sports Injury Clinic he had established in his home became a larger commercial practice. With Phil as founder, director and CEO, the company won more than 500+ government tenders over 8 years and grew to employ 120 allied health and medical staff nationwide. In 2004 Phil helped establish the first Physiotherapy course in Canberra, now graduating approximately 100 top ranked clinicians per year. Accepting a full-time tenured position at the University of Canberra in 2008, Phil completed a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education. Phil's expertise in teaching has been recognised with 4 teaching awards nominated by his peers and students. Eventually having time to complete a PhD in 2017 (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome), Phil is since supervising multiple PhD projects predominantly in sports and military projects. Research interests are in musculoskeletal injury prevention and management, particularly medial tibial stress syndrome,  motor control in anterior cruciate ligament injury, clinical prediction, and spinal pain in military aircrew. These interests and connections internationally have resulted in significant success in research funding (over $3M as bid leader), 2 external research prizes, and commercialisation opportunities. Phil is an experienced international speaker and author of around 40 peer-reviewed papers.

Phil continues to add to his 30+ years as a clinician working at the University Clinic alongside his academic roles as educator, researcher and mentor.
