Biography
Dr Sora Park is Professor of Communication and Professorial Research Fellow at the News & Media Research Centre, Faculty of Arts & Design, University of Canberra. She is internationally recognised as an expert in digital media users and media policy, with a special focus on news consumers and digital inclusion.
She has an outstanding record of publications, grants management and research translation, producing more than 300 publications (4 books, 17 book chapters, 6 edited volumes, 100+ journal articles, 60+ refereed conference papers, 50+ research reports, 13 public submissions, 49 non-academic contributions) and 100+ invited talks and presentations. She has over 4,500 Google Scholar citations, with an h-index of 32 and i-10 index of 86.
She has been awarded $5M in grant income, including three ARC Discovery Projects and two Linkage Projects as well as industry funding from ABC, SBS, Google News Initiative and Australian Communications & Media Authority.
One of the key achievements of her research career has been the ability to develop relationships and work collaboratively with stakeholders beyond academia to affect real-world outcomes and deliver tangible benefits. As the Project Leader of the Digital News Report: Australia, she has an ongoing collaboration with the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford tracking digital news consumers through annual surveys of 47 countries. This project is an essential resource for policy makers and industry about the changing nature of news media landscape.
Sora is a major contributor to the field of Communication and Media Studies in Australia and internationally, notably as the former Associate Dean of Research at the Faculty of Arts & Design, Director of the News & Media Research Centre, the Chair of Media Industry Studies Interest Group, International Communication Association (ICA) and the President of Australian and New Zealand Communication Association (2019-2021).
As an experienced academic leader, she has implemented and administered complex curriculum development and led research groups. She received High Commendation, Research Excellence Award (UC, 2024), the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence UC (2016) and Vice Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Team Achievement (2018), as recognition of her excellence and leadership in research.
She has extensive global experience in government and private sector consulting and has a broad range of research expertise ranging from large-scale surveys to in-depth qualitative methods.
