Biography
Anthony is The Associate Dean of Education (Strategic Planning) in the Faculty of Arts and Design at the University of Canberra, where he is also Professor of Creative Writing and Literary Studies. He researches the application of artistic practice to trauma recovery and resillience development, and also the contemporary influence of Australian Children's and Young Adult fiction upon cultural discourse.
He was the curriculum designer for, and is currently the lead CI of the Department of Defence-funded Arts for Recovery, Resillience, Teamwork and Skills (ARRTS) program, which has been running successfully at the University of Canberra since 2015.
He is a past president of the Australasian Children's Literarature Association for Research (2014-2018), Past editor of the journal Papers: Explorations into Children's Literature, and is a core member of the Centre for Cultural and Creative Research at the University of Canberra. He has worked extensively in the creation and delivery of innovative creative writing programs including the Talented Young Writers Program at The Literature Centre (Fremantle, Western Australia), the UWrite@UC program (University of Canberra) and the Defence ARRTS project.
He is a practicing author, with particular expertise in the area of practice led research. In this capacity, he has been writing for children, young adults, and adults since the late 1990s. He has published eleven novels, has twice won the Western Australian Premier’s Literary Award for young adult fiction, and twice been awarded an Honour Book award by the Children’s Book Council of Australia. His works have also featured on the International Youth Library’s annual White Ravens catalogue of significant international children’s books.
At the end of 2005 he was awarded an Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship, which enabled him to travel to Antarctica to research his novel Into White Silence which received critical acclaim, including an Honour Book Prize in the 2009 Children's Book Council of Australia awards, Shortlisting in the Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards, and shortlisting in the Centre for Youth Literature Inky awards. In late 2011, Random House Australia re-published a literary edition of Into White Silence for the adult marketplace.
His Darklands Trilogy have been shortlisted and awarded in the Aurealis Awards for Australian Speculative Fiction. The final book of the trilogy, Daywards, was released by UQP in March 2010, and was a CBCA notable Australian Children’s book in 2011
Anthony is an experienced doctoral supervisor, with specific expertise in the area of practice-led research, and Australian children's and young adult literature. He has expertise across a number of roles in the area of research training and leadership, including a six year term as the convener of higher degrees by research for the Faculty of Arts and design, and a two year term as one of the University of Canberra's inaugeral Graduate Research Fellows. He was a contributing designer of the University of Canberra's innovative PhD Plus strategy, and has designed and taught coursework units to all commencing HDR students, as well as designed and run numerous professional development for HDR supervisors.
