Breeding and reintroductions to save the Canberra Grassland Earless Dragon

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The Canberra Grassland Earless Dragon is among Australia’s most imperilled reptiles. Conservation efforts are focussed on ensuring its survival through captive breeding and reintroductions of captive animals into suitable habitat. This project aims to: 1. Increase the capacity of captive breeding facilities to provide sufficient individuals to underpin an ongoing reintroduction program. 2. Develop a strategy for long-term management of captive colonies to ensure genetically fit individuals are reintroduced into the wild to maximise reintroduction success. 3. Determine the number and size of reintroductions, and hence the number of captive bred individuals required, to guarantee survival of the species for the next 100 years.
