Description

Executive summary

Who we are:
'Brighter Beginnings' is a collaborative interprofessional team that brings together industry, community, and university sectors, specifically Southern NSW Health, the University of Canberra, and communities in the ACT and surrounding areas. Our team includes First Nations health workers, midwives, pharmacists, and nurses. We have a proven track record of conducting interdisciplinary, collaborative research with community members, focusing on health promotion initiatives for women and families.

Description of the need:
This year (2024), Australia has already seen a surge in pertussis (whooping cough) cases. Vaccination uptake during pregnancy is lower in First Nations women when compared to other women. There are also higher pertussis hospitalisation rates in First Nations infants.

Our initiative:
"Let’s have a yarn about the whooping cough vaccine", will bring together expectant First Nations women, who live in the Southern NSW Local Health District (SNSWLDH) to ‘yarn’ about the pertussis vaccine. Yarning will be facilitated by First Nations peoples. At least five yarning circles will be organised, hosted in Goulburn, Queanbeyan, Moruya, Bega, and Cooma. Additional yarning circles will be flexible, ensuring inclusivity and accommodating the needs of the community. This initiative’s overarching goal is to foster shared decision-making, enhance pertussis vaccine uptake, and mitigate vaccine hesitancy within this demographic. A secondary outcome will be the development of an acceptable culturally appropriate vaccines information leaflet (s), co-developed with First Nations Women who live in the area to meet their information needs – “women’s business”.

What makes our project unique:
Our project will leverage the unique interprofessional and collaborative approach of our team, Brighter Beginnings. It will provide First Nations women living in southern New South Wales (NSW) a culturally appropriate forum to discuss vaccines that will protect them and their newborn.
The information leaflets informed by the yarning circles, will be distributed across Southern NSW Local Health community centres, general practices, and community pharmacies. Our initiative aims to ensure continuous provision of culturally sensitive information that meets the information requirements of women residing in Southern NSW.
