Re-storying Kakadu

As a globally celebrated national park, Kakadu plays a pivotal role in storying Australia. Previous historical heritage assessments in the park have emphasised a dualistic representation of Indigenous past/colonial present.
Rejecting this conceptual divide and developing a collaborative, strengths-based methodology, this project will examine places of the recent past that tell important stories of the lives of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
This interdisciplinary project integrates archaeological, ethnographic, cultural landscape and archival approaches.
It provides significant local, regional and national benefits for communities, researchers, government and wider public by telling a more nuanced and inclusive story of Australia.
