    Abstract

The new media including the Internet have several characteristics, Among those, the usages' relation to social relationships is becoming more important, This study aims at examining how the children's everyday life is filled with media usage in relevance to human relationships.
For the study, a survey of 137 elementary school students residing in Seoul and their parents was conducted. Most variables concerning the media usage in the home was assessed by asking the parents. Other attitudinal variables were obtained directly from students. The results show that children still spend most time with television even though they thought that the Internet was more important and fun. Children who perceived TV to be more important than the Internet or cell phones had more active social activities in school, TV served as a medium that initiated information exchange among children, The motivation of using the Internet turned out to influence the leadership in school, Entertainment and information oriented usage had high correlation with leadership, whilst communicative motives had less relevance to offline relationships but was more effective in maintaining relationships, Parents media usage was highly correlated with the children's media usage, The conversation time spent at home with parents were negatively correlated with TV watching, There is evidence that media usage is related to both domestic parenting style and relationships as well as the social relations that the young students build at school
