Adopting Yarning-style tutorials to Increase online Student Engagement

Abstract

Educators describe the challenges of engaging students who are learning online Khan et al., 2017. This case study reports on Design Science Research (DSR) undertaken to Indigenise the Information Technology (IT) curriculum. The research observed increasing attendance rates in both face-to-face and online classes of an Information Technology (IT) unit where students used the Aboriginal way of learning through Story Sharing from 12% in 2020 and progressively increasing to 85% in 2023. The researchers used the University of Canberra Learning Management System, Canvas, to survey all students at the start and end of ten classes over one semester to observe increasing levels of participation and learning over ten weeks. By reviewing the comments from the students, the research indicates a change from resistance to the new method in the first few weeks to embracing and improving the new learning style in later weeks.
