Abstract

Reinforced concrete (RC) plays a very important role in the construction field worldwide because of its versatility, reasonable price, and especially its advantages of being resilient in extreme conditions. However, steel corrosion is regarded as one of the most important issues in affecting durability and stiffness/strength of RC structures. Additionally, carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) have been extensively applied for retrofitting and strengthening in RC structures recently, due to the properties of high corrosion resistance and durability, high loading strength, ease of transportation and construction on sites. Accordingly, the aim of this research is to critically report on a literature review of CFRP adhered to RC structures in protecting steel corrosion. This aim is achieved through the following research objectives: 1) investigating the CFRP roles in protection of steel corrosion in RC structures; 2) assessing the performance of various CFRP wrapping types and coverage ratios in steel corrosion protection in RC structures under various environment conditions; 3) comparing corrosion monitoring methods for measuring steel corrosion rates in RC structures adhered by CFRP; 4) identifying challenges in monitoring, assessing and protecting steel corrosion in RC structures adhered by CFRP. This paper reviews the protection of steel corrosion provided by CFRP that has received only small coverage in previous review studies. Recommendations for future research will also be explored. The results of this review will confirm advantages from the application of CFRP in steel corrosion protection in RC structures.
