Apps for people with vision impairment: An international review of practitioner suggestions and app availability in 2025

Abstract

Globally, smartphones and tablets are increasingly used by people with vision impairment (VI), offering versatile and discreet alternatives to traditional assistive devices. The availability of apps designed specifically for people with VI, and general-purpose apps widely adopted by this population has increased, with many playing a critical role in supporting daily activities and promoting independence. However, the large volume and variability of available apps can make it difficult for users and practitioners to identify the most effective options. This review provides current insights into the types of visual assistive apps recommended by low vision rehabilitation (LVR) professionals worldwide, drawing on an international survey of practitioner recommendations and app store analysis across four countries and two major operating systems. Commonly recommended apps were, Seeing AI and Be My Eyes, in high income countries (HICs), and weZoom Magnifying glass and Be My Eyes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Optometrists more commonly recommended magnifier apps, while therapists tended to suggest more computer vision and sighted guide apps. Notably only two of the 10 most recommended apps (Seeing AI and Be My Eyes) appeared consistently in app store searches across the four countries and operating systems. App recommendation patterns varied by practitioner role, region, and patient context, reflecting potential differences in access, awareness, training, device availability, and patient needs. Communicating these regional differences in app availability and recommendation patterns can help LVR professionals provide tailored support to diverse patient populations. Given the rapid pace and volume of app development, it is essential that most suitable apps for people with VI are regularly reviewed, and this information is clearly communicated to practitioners, enabling them to offer informed and up-to-date guidance. By comparing practitioner perspectives from HICs and LMICs, and app availability data, this review would help to support informed clinical decision-making and encourage more consistent integration of mobile technology into low vision care.
