Abstract

Childhood cancer is very rare; only around 1 in 200 (0.5%) of all cancers occur in children aged under 15 years (Strobel et al. 2007). Leukemia is the most common type of childhood cancer, representing about one-third of all cancers in under 15 year olds (Childhood Cancer Research Group 2011). The majority (80%) of childhood leukemia cases are acute lymphatic leukemia (ALL). Other types include acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), although chronic forms of leukemia are more common in adults than children.
