    Abstract

    The verbal barrage launched by Australia's conservative Liberal-National government against the Labor-led opposition last week, accusing it of being China's preferred winner at the forthcoming election, missed its mark.

    The charge was met first by incredulity since as commentators pointed out, there is no difference between Australia's government and the alternative government on China policy. Incredulity was followed by outrage as former members of Australia's intelligence community rejected the government's accusation.
