Country our teacher: A new direction for Australian education.

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

We are at a point in Australian education where, increasingly, students, teachers, and schools are expressing dissatisfaction with what they perceive to be an inadequate and overcrowded curriculum that does not adequately meet the needs of learners moving into a world filled with economic, environmental, and social uncertainty. In this paper, we discuss a Country as Teacher pedagogy which follows the guidance of Indigenous wisdom and knowledge to refocus education on eco-centric, sustainable ways of being (Spillman et al., 2022, 2023; Wilson, 2021, 2025). These practices offer a means of decolonising education through place-base approaches that centralise and prioritise Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing.
