    Abstract

    In this chapter, we examine educational leadership in the context of China, and specifically of Shanghai. We take a critical approach y focusing on system strategic leadership, principal instructional leadership and teacher pedagogical leadership. This will allow you to understand the modernizing trends based on globalized and travelling leadership models interplayed with traditional values and practices in China. By examining the research evidence and debated on critical perspectives in educational leadership in China, we enable exploration of Chinese leadership traditions and contextual analysis at multiple layers. Our chapter explains key aspects of culture and values in China that make educational leaders, leading and leadership distinctive. It examines education policies and ideological and organizational factors that are contributing to contemporary educational-leadership practices. Using the Shanghai education system as a lens, we critically assess the roles and approaches of leadership in terms of system strategic leadership, principal instructional leadership in terms of system strategic leadership, principal instructional leadership and teacher pedagogical leadership.
