Abstract
In recent years there has been a rapid growth in the successful use of advanced data mining and knowledge discovery systems in many diverse areas such as science, medicine and commerce. The main contribution factor for the development of such systems in medicine has been the extra demands for more powerful yet flexible and transparent techniques to cope with the extensive amount of data and knowledge stored in clinical databases. Many of these techniques are currently under active development for use in the practice of clinical medicine. This chapter will consider a long standing problem of clinical knowledge discovery and decision making process, which is concerned with intelligently processing large amounts of clinical and medical data for knowledge discovery and decision support. The primary aim of this chapter will be to outline some of the potential and common challenges and expectations of intelligent knowledge discovery and data mining systems in medical sectors.
