Abstract

In this paper, we revisit and re-examine the importance of and possibilities for supporting and scaffolding learner activity, with a particular focus on discovery learning tasks mediated by information and communications technologies. We propose a new framework for classifying scaffolding in technology-mediated environments that consists of two dimensions, the first of which pertains to the type of knowledge development being supported and the second of which identifies the pedagogical technique used to provide the scaffolding. Having introduced our framework, we proceed to describe examples that illustrate the ways in which each category of scaffolding within the framework might be realized.
