Abstract
The outdoors presents an environment that is often substantially different from the urban environment in which many people live. With advances in technology designed for use in the outdoors there is an ever increasing possibility that the new products, equipment and communications devices being adopted will begin to barricade us from the very place, the outdoors, that we have chosen to be in. This paper reflects upon the impact that technology can have upon experiences of space, place, and sense of place and raises questions as to whether, in the name of safety and risk management, we are losing interaction and connection with the outdoors as well as the ‘venture’ that makes for an outdoor adventure
