Abstract
The Advanced Symptom Management System (ASyMS) has been developed over the past 10 years and has been used in a number of different cancer care settings. In the latest study the system is being evaluated in a three-phase, multi-site complex intervention study, with a before and after study design. A risk analysis was undertaken to assess the safety features of the system. Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) is a risk analysis technique originally used in engineering but has recently been applied in a variety of different settings. It is an innovative approach to testing the safety of a new health technology. The aim of the analysis was to identify all of the potential failures in the system as early as possible in order to eliminate them or mitigate their effects in a timely manner. This paper will outline the methodology used to undertake this risk analysis.
