    Abstract

    This article sets out to trace the history of Indonesian mathematics education from pre-colonial period to the present. It highlights key events that have been influential in shaping the conceptualisation of mathematics and its teaching. We then conclude with the greatest educational challenges for Indonesia and the possible solutions to resolve some of these challenges.
