Abstract
I loved the article “How to Evacuate a Psychiatric Hospital: A Hurricane Katrina Success Story” by Thomas and Lackey (January 2008, Vol. 46, No. 1, pp. 35–40). I am located at a state-funded mental health center and oversee emergency planning. I have used the information from the article to add to our facility’s evacuation plan. I was even asked to present what evacuation plan we have here so our sister hospitals and other facilities can learn from our plan, which follows the model in the article.
I think the article’s key points are great, as well as the detailed explanation about the extent of the evacuation plan and the lessons learned. My facility’s evacuation plan isn’t exactly the same as the one presented in the article, but the article spelled out step by step the things that need to be done and the best order in which to do them. I really appreciate this information being published.
