Abstract
Narrowcast is performance artwork presented at Bunbury Regional Art Galleries in 2019 that explored the practice of improvised speech under the duress of durational performance. McKenzie installed a radio studio in the gallery and with another performer ‘narrowcast’ during opening hours for nine days. Hundreds of visitors were engaged in listening from the studio lounge, leaving written responses, joining the narrowcast as scheduled or spontaneous guests. Research questions examined the role of scores for structuring improvised performance; framing speech as performance to illuminate its improvisational nature; embodied techniques for durational performance.
