Nutritional Considerations for the Young Swimmer

Research output: A Conference proceeding or a Chapter in BookChapterpeer-review

Abstract

The wealth of information around nutrition and supplements to maintain health and optimise growth and athletic performance can be overwhelming when looking after a young athlete. This chapter examines the importance of a food-first approach to good dietary practices, the influence of training and growth and maturation, practical issues in relation to swimming training and competition, and details on both macro- and micro-nutrients. The issue of supplements for training and competition is then considered, as well as illness, injury and disordered eating, and education and ethical considerations, when working with young swimmers. Finally, the life-long impact of good dietary practices is examined.
