Abstract
The Conservation of Fort Alice for adaptive reuse as a Heritage Museum in Sri Aman project was successfully completed on-time with a cost saving. One of the factors contributing to its success was the experience gained from conserving other historical buildings in Sarawak by the Conservation Architect, Arkitek JFN Sdn Bhd. The gazetted historical buildings under the custodian of Sarawak Museum Department (JMS) that have been conserved by Arkitek JFN Sdn Bhd are the Kuching Old Courthouse, Square Tower and Fort Margherita. The Kuching Old Courthouse was first conserved in 2004, when there were no local guidelines on conservation work and the consulting team had no previous experiences. The subsequent conservation of the Square Tower in 2010 was carried out by adopting the Burra Charter guidelines and a conservation report was produced to document the conservation work. The conservation of Fort Margherita in 2013 was funded by the federal government under the leadership of Jabatan Warisan Negara and the project was awarded through an open tender. A Building Conservator was employed by the contractor, but he was not positioned full time on the site; and the site team was also inexperienced with conservation work. The process was recorded in a HABS report by the building conservator.
