title = "Pharmacology: Paracetamol prescribing",
abstract = "In this chapter, the scope of midwifery practice is discussed with respect to independent prescribing. The authors assume that readers have current pharmacology knowledge and a comprehensive knowledge of normal and complicated childbirth. The discussion in this chapter is limited to pharmaceutical medicines and does not cover the use of complementary or non-pharmaceutical therapies. The authors acknowledge that prescription of medicines is always evolving according to evidence, availability of pharmaceuticals and cost. Midwife prescribers have an obligation to maintain a current knowledge of the safety of medicines in pregnancy and lactation, and of preferred pharmaceuticals for particular conditions. ",
