Queering the heteronormative and gender binary workspace

Abstract

Organisational spaces are defined by heteronormative and gender binary norms that increase exclusion and encourage discrimination against trans and gender-diverse employees in the work environment. It is argued that trans and gender-diverse people resist oppression by utilising and transforming space via the queering approach including everyday actions of exploring, sharing, protecting, and recovering. Not always are all these everyday actions possible which requires organisational support to modify the space due to material adaptation or at least inclusive policy implication to raise awareness about spatial performativity. Considerations of spatial performativity are extended by the three perspectives of visual research, namely significance, manifestation, and implication but require further explorations due to the limited interview insights. Additional exploration should adopt the queering approach and build on the feminist research concerning gendered spaces in the work context of the last three decades by simultaneously include trans and gender-diverse voices.
