Quotation: The 34th annual conference of SAHANZ

Research output: Contribution to journalReview article

Abstract

The 34th annual conference of the Society of Architectural Historians, Australia
and New Zealand was held from 5–8 July 2017, in Canberra. The society’s annual
conferences are one of the main ways through which the organisation “fulfils its
aim to promote discussion, criticism and debate of architectural history.”1
While ten papers were presented at the society’s first conference in 1984, in Adelaide,
SAHANZ annual conferences have grown into the region’s largest regular forum
for architectural history research. These conferences are hosted by architecture
schools in Australia and New Zealand at various locations across the region.
The conference was entitled Quotation, Quotation: What does History Have in
Store for Architecture Today? It was hosted and supported by the Faculty of Arts
and Design at the University of Canberra and held at the Australian Academy
of Science’s Shine Dome (1959, designed by Grounds, Romberg and Boyd).
The conference convenors were Gevork Hartoonian and John Ting, both from
the University of Canberra. The organising committee comprised the convenors,
as well as Macarena de la Vega de Leon (University of Canberra), Philip
Goad (University of Melbourne) and Harry Margalit (University of New South
Wales). The conference was sponsored by Cox Architecture, Canberra, Stewart
Architecture and the Sydney firm FJMT (Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp). The
University of Canberra collaborated with the University of New South Wales,
the University of Sydney, the University of Technology Sydney, the University of
Melbourne and Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland in bringing one of the
keynotes, Jean-Louis Cohen, to Canberra. This collaboration saw Cohen deliver
lectures in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland.
