Robotic Zen

Research output: Non-textual formExhibition

Abstract

Background
Robotic Zen is an original creative project in the fields of computational design and robotic fabrication. The installation consists of a collection of generative (algorithmic) patterns robotically drawn in the medium of sand. The project explores practices of mindfulness, specifically doodling, in the age of automation.

Contribution
The project presents five (5) highly figural line drawings generated algorithmically that explore computational approaches to space filling, colonisation or tiling. In an automated process, each of these resulting patterns is cast as a toolpath to a bespoke six-axis industrial robot drawing apparatus.

Significance
Robotic Zen was included in the 2023 Uncharted Territory Festival presented by the ACT Government (Events ACT) and the Australian National University. Robotic Zen was supported by the ACT Government's City Renewal Authority through their Second Space public program.
