Abstract
The recommended strategy to attenuate the secondary effects of lithium are to reduce the dose, association with other euthymic drugs, and the use of sustained release formulations. Our attention should be drawn to the complete lack of these formulations in Spain and places doubts upon the therapeutic arsenal available in our country for the treatment of bipolar disorders. This chapter reviews the characteristics of sustained release (S.R.) preparations and presents a series of cases treated with one of these preparations after the appearance of side effects with Plenur®.
