Abstract
The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector has entered a data-driven era, necessitating an integration of building information modelling (BIM) with big data (Big BIM data). However, current data-management practices within the industry are underdeveloped, constraining AEC’s capacity to meet Industry 4.0. We address this challenge by developing a Strategic Alignment Framework to optimally integrate big BIM data into organisational strategies. A Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling is employed to examine it. Emergent results reveal the pivotal role and pathways of aligning business strategy with BIM-data processes to enhance operational efficiency and competitiveness. Discussion on facilitating future practice and epistemological development is also presented. The contribution of this study is threefold viz: (1) expanding strategic alignment paradigms; (2) providing empirical insights into how big BIM data drives business process automation and cognitive insights/engagement; and (3) setting forth an agender for research on advancing business-IT alignment to better leverage BIM.
