Abstract

The Broken Hill silver-lead-zinc deposit is one of the largest and most famous ore deposits in the world. This unique orebody has played a pre-eminent role in the mining history of Australia and also in the history of industrialisation of the nation.1 As the deposit was progressively developed and its immense scale revealed, the resulting innovations and breakthroughs in mining and ore processing technologies became globally significant. The discovery and mining of Broken Hill has shaped or touched many aspects of the Australian way of life.
