Abstract

The Components of Spelling: Instruction and Assessment for the Linguistic Inquirer is an evidence-based resource for primary and middle school classroom educators. This practical manual offers a framework most suitable for Years 3 to 6 teachers who seek to plan and implement explicit and systematic spelling instruction that caters for diverse learners in a classroom. It includes a standardised assessment tool, The Components of Spelling Test (CoST): Real-word Version, and over 200 pages of practical ideas and resources for classroom use. The instructional recommendations and templates included in the manual align with the CoST and they are structured around the three fundamental linguistic processes involved in Standard English spelling: i) phonological strategies; ii) orthographic strategies; and iii) morphological strategies.
