Abstract
I play with data. I think there's an important argument to be made for the role of play in research, particularly when confronted with large, heterogenous datasets, but what does it really mean? In this paper I want to explore the meanings of 'play' within digital cultural heritage.
I play with collections. From Twitter bots to redaction art, I build things using the holdings of cultural heritage collections that are often both playful and political. By reflecting on the characteristics of these works, I want to explore the multiplication of contexts as a method for generating new perspectives and new knowledge. Is this the serious business of data play?
