Twenty articles for twenty years

Research output: Contribution to journalEditorial

Abstract

How to decide on the twenty most influential articles in the first 20 years of the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport? Do we rely on the subjective assessment of our eminent Editorial Board members or do we rely solely on the metadata for citations and download statistics? Does number of downloads relate to clinical interest and relevance of an article and are citation rates more representative of the scientific value of an article? For a Journal which aims to meet the needs of a practice based and a research readership both of these factors are important. This is further complicated in that download numbers and citation rates of articles don’t necessarily correlate with some authors suggesting a relationship exists between downloads and citation rates,1, 2, 3 while others report no relationship.4
