Abstract
This response acknowledges the importance of Boswell and Corbett’s contribution, arguing that their focus on impressions sits well, perhaps better than a focus on being systematic, with an interpretivist position. It continues by exploring the way in which different approaches to social science utilize ‘theory’, focusing particularly on how a critical realist would deal with some of the issues raised by Boswell and Corbett.
