Abstract

The software industry has already recognised the need to form associations and partnerships to best exploit niche market opportunities and deliver timely products and solutions. This can be seen in the almost daily announcements of company partnerships and memoranda of understandings. However, the technology to support such dynamic collaboration between companies is only in its early development e.g. Intranets, Extranet, GroupWare applications. The early nineties has seen the rise of ‘virtual enterprises’ which are formed as an association of service providers who collaborate to deliver a product (service). The idea being that the desired product or service cannot be developed by a single provider, hence the need to collaborate outside the boundaries of a single company. Further motivation for such virtual enterprises can be seen in the current business trend of downsizing organisation and outsourcing non-core business processes
