Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

The aim of this research project is to investigate the painting techniques, materials and conservation problems relating to the work of Tasmanian colonial (convict) artist, William Buelow Gould. Biographical and historical information about the artist and an investigation of his range of subject matter have been used to supplement information acquired by analysis of his painting techniques and materials. Conservation problems common to Gould's paintings are assessed and reviewed in association with other information collected. Treatments were formulated and carried out on six of his paintings.
This work will help with further research into the painting techniques, materials and conservation related matters of Australian colonial painting. It will be of benefit to other conservators, historians and curators.
