St. Ambrose is a Catholic systemic primary school located in Sydney’s inner West region, with an enrolment of 236 pupils. The nature of the school population has changed considerably during recent years, with younger families moving into the area to replace established families who have resided in Concord West for many years. Many of the children from these families are learning English as a second language. The study was undertaken as an exploratory study of this school community. It aimed to give descriptive information about the nature of the community and also about attitudes and expectations. This was to enable the school to establish closer links with the homes in order that the staff could develop curriculum guidelines which would reflect the cultural diversity of the community.
